About this deal

The 2011 award recognised her works of the previous year, which were His Face All Red, Dream Journals, The Death of José Arcadio, Out the Door, and The Hare’s Bride. The 2012 award noted her work Margot's Room. During "In Conclusion", the young girl confidently ignores the dangers of the woods and makes it to her mother's house without incident. Actually seeing just how dangerous the woods can be, however, seems to deeply traumatize and terrify her. Children Are Innocent: Hannah is the youngest of the three sisters. Unlike Mary, who sunk into denial following their father's death, and Beth, who is concerned for everyone's safety, Hannah is a poor kid who doesn't really understand what's going on. Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Little Hannah has blonde hair to show her childish youth and innocence compared to her brown-haired older sisters. this is another little shorty - the urban legend rim shot to end end the collection on a pop. it's a little red riding hood offshoot whose zinger is pretty much the same shape as this joke that i am spoiler tagging for people who don't think pedophile jokes are ever funny:

A collection of horror stories that all feature that epitome of childhood creepiness - the woods. The artwork style, simplistic and almost child-like adds to the tension, and Emily Carroll is not afraid of some blood and gore in her illustrations. Signature Headgear: The strange man who haunts the three girls is frequently described as having a wide-brimmed hat, but little else, adding to the overall mystery of his presence. It's used to imply that the man is something else, as once it's described by others or shows up on-screen, someone is going to die. At the end, Beth accepts the strange man planting his hat on her head, symbolizing her acceptance that she is dead and is able to reunite with her dead family. This girl's father marries her off to this man and she moves into his manor. Well, she gets waken up every night hearing some singing.Hannah wears a white dress and a yellow cloak, which emphasizes her youth and innocence. Of the three sisters, she doesn't really understand everything that's going on, including the importance of surviving a heavy snowstorm and the ramifications of their father's death.

Break the Cutie: Being a young child, Hannah really doesn't take Mary disappearing/dying the night before very well and spends much of her time wailing. Beth notes there's no place in the house that would allow her to escape her sister's crying. I'd heard this graphic novel was creepy, but I don't think I'd realised just how creepy. I probably should have guessed when it said it was perfect for fans of Neil Gaiman. This is one of my favorite stories and I just really wish we could have found out what was exactly inside that house at the end! This girl Janna used to speak to ghosts but it wasn't for real, she was scamming people. But her friend really did see ghosts. It’s a helluva start to the book which sets a standard that the other stories unfortunately don’t match with each one becoming slightly less inspired than the last. They’re all good stories but none measure up to the chilling brilliance of Our Neighbor’s House.

Shoot the Shaggy Dog: After both of her sisters have disappeared with the man with the wide-brimmed hat and toothy smile, Beth flees her home to the neighbor's house, despite being without any food and the snow now being much worse than it was several days prior. After an exhausting, dangerous trek, she finally makes it to the neighbor's house... and finds the man with the wide-brimmed hat waiting for her there. The critic Joe McCulloch said of Carroll's His Face All Red, “Even in the late ’80s, guys like Stephen Bissette were developing forums like Taboo which were specifically designed to counteract the traditionalism of comics horror … ‘His Face All Red’ seemed a break from that when it hit me. And it hit a lot of people.” Discover a terrifying world in the woods in this collection of five hauntingly beautiful graphic stories that includes the online webcomic sensation “His Face All Red,” in print for the first time. Gavaler, Chris (4 March 2019). "Pussycats, Lesbian Vampires, and the Blood-Splattered Erotica of Emily Carroll's 'When I Arrived at the Castle' ". PopMatters . Retrieved 28 February 2021.It's not gory, or graphic. It's... unsettling. It's creepy. It's like the darkest of the old-school faerie tales.
