Holbein have quite an extensive range in this collection which is always beneficial to the colored pencil artist. The largest set available is 150, however, there are also three sets of 12, each set offering a different color palette. Next is the 24 set, 36 set, 50 set, 100 set and of course the 150 set. With the 100 set, there are two versions available, the original cardboard and then a wooden gift box set, this is also the case for the largest of the sets, the 150. Holbein Performance Professional artists looking for value should consider the Derwent Colored Pencils ColourSoft. With lightfast and vibrant colors, a soft lead that is great for blending, and excellent durability, these pencils are an impressive choice. Normally pencil companies try to impress you with a ton of blues. Holbein keeps their blue family smaller than usual (they gave that space to the greens!) but I don’t see any missing blues. The blues they offer are all unique tones and values. A nice selection of periwinkles too! Faber-Castell is a company that needs no introduction to the art community. They make some of the best quality art products that artists all around the globe abide by. Given the core ingredients previously mentioned, the consistency of the Holbein core is simply gorgeous. Smooth and creamy, but with the addition of oils and wax combined, the core is strong enough to maintain a decent point after sharpening. The pencil will not maintain a point quite as long as an oil only pencil, never the less, I was impressed with the longevity of the core throughout various tests.

They also surpass any other colored pencils in terms of lightfastness and permanence. Over 80% of their pencils belong to class I of lightfastness, which means they will remain unhindered for over 100 years. And the remaining colors belong to class II, meaning they will maintain their luster for 50 to 100 years.I’ve honestly never found the ideal substrate (paper) to use with Holbeins. I use light pressure and prefer to layer, I don’t burnish. With Holbein, I often end up filling in specific toothy spots that have been missed. This is something that rarely happens to me with other brands. The Dagwood project here was colored on Vellum Bristol (Strathmore 500 series) and it’s toothier than I envisioned. Of course, the best of the bests will also be valued at a similar price point but that would never be a problem for a professional who is making a living from the quality of these pencils. Holbeins are a soft-core pencil and the exposed core will break off if you drop the pencil onto a hard floor. Since the pencils are all-lead, you can toggle between fine lines and broad strokes with just a slight movement making them extremely flexible to use. Filling out large areas also become s way easier. Holbein bodies are fully coated with a gloss lacquer giving them an almost a silky feel. It’s very nice and not as slippery as I expected.

Holbein opaques are so dense that they often look a muted in comparison to their translucent colors. I’ve never noticed dullness in the finished product.And the best part is that your artworks will maintain their luster for years to come because the colors are incredibly lightfast.
